Remember this little gem from 10 Things I Hate About You?
“I know you can be overwhelmed, and you can be underwhelmed; but can you ever just be whelmed?”
“I think you can in Europe…”
I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed this week. It’s an over-used analogy, but I feel like I’m just barely treading water as the ocean waves are beginning to swell over my head.
But the more I think about it, I don’t want calm waters so it’s easier to swim. No. I want a surf board so I can ride these waves! I think the water and waves are really about circumstances, which sometimes we can control and sometimes we can’t.
Whether or not I surf is about attitude. That I CAN choose. I can choose to take the waves as they come, ready or not, and make something out of them. I can choose to bless every person I come in contact with, even if they are interrupting something “important,” or their presence in my day seems–God forbid–peripheral to me. I can choose to lead and manage myself first, trusting God that other things will fall in line.
I can choose.
As my day is starting, I can see those waves coming. Time to surf!
