I’ll make this easy for you: stop reading this review, go get a copy of Wrecked, and read it/listen to it right now.
If you’re still reading this, I guess that means you need a little more convincing. Suffice it to say, Jeff Goins has written the book on facing and confronting the pain and suffering of the world. He doesn’t pull any punches, and he writes as a peer to that cagey and mercurial group known as young adults. He leaves no stone un-turned, and his honesty and insight is so refreshing. He gives names the things I have felt and voices to the fears and questions of my heart.
Goins talks about his own experience of being “wrecked,” his name for being broken as we are faced with the brokenness of this world. He doesn’t glamorize his journey and he doesn’t promise that our own pursuit of justice will be glamorous or “trendy.” He puts forth pain as the path to purpose.
He also deals with a subject that usually remains un-addressed: how do we continue to live “wrecked” lives when we’re holding a steady job and raising a family?
This book should be required reading for anyone preparing to go on—or returning from—a short-term mission trip. It’s a reality check. Actually, I would go far as to say it’s a must-read for any Christian young adult who wants to live a life of significance.
Goins does a great job narrating his own book. The emotional impact is heightened by his reading.
