What happens when a pastor known for his gospel exposition and a clinical counselor get together and write a book about the power of the gospel to help us change? You end up with an excellent book like Recovering Redemption.
Matt Chandler, the pastor, is the author of The Explicit Gospel, a tour-de-force that attempts to re-connect the gospel to daily life in the minds of believers. This book is a continuation of that book in many respects, showing how the gospel can relate to specific situations and struggles. Michael Snetzer, the counselor, came to Christ as an adult and knows firsthand from his life and clients the transformative power of the gospel.
The book is structured much like the book of Romans. The first part of the book shows the futility of our attempts to change ourselves apart from God. Then Chandler and Snetzer present the gospel as both the beginning of change (justification) and the “fuel” of the process of change (sanctification). In between the authors cover the topics of spiritual adoption, shame, reconciliation, and forgiveness.
There is so much here that is beneficial. I can imagine readers of this book being set free from sin struggles and relationships restored, as people are inspired to turn to the gospel of Christ instead of more of their own effort in order to change. This book is comprehensive, yet always focused on the real human desire to change and improve, overcoming those things that have us stuck.
I really enjoyed the writing style of this book, which is lighthearted full of beat-poet style metaphors and allusions despite the focus on theology and doctrine. This is a book that both moves and promises movement. It is meant to be read by a wide audience, and think it achieves this goal while still offering meaty theological morsels.
Paul Michael does a great job on the narration of the audiobook. His tone and speaking style are a perfect complement to the writing style. This book is a must-read (or a must-listen) because it is a powerful reminder of where real, lasting change comes from. It’s relentless focus on the relentless effort of God to change our hearts is refreshing and empowering.
